Northampton Community College – Protecting A State-of-the-Art Building with Elemax™ AWB Coating

Northampton Community College – Protecting A State-of-the-Art Building with Elemax™ AWB Coating

The Monroe Campus at Northampton Community College employed Momentive's silicone sealants coatings helped overcome winter challenges.

The Monroe Campus is Northampton Community College’s newest addition and is composed of three state-of-the-art, energy-efficient buildings.

Located approximately two miles away from the current location in Tannersville, PA, the ambitious project is set over nearly 200,000-sq-ft and boasts a strong contemporary design.

With amenities that include science and computer labs, meeting rooms, art studios and galleries, a state-of-the-art library, and service areas – Monroe Campus offers a small campus feel and modern, student-centered experience.

Silicone Sealants: Success in Cold Weather

The project lead’s number one priority was finding an air and water barrier system that could be easily stored and applied in the dead of winter so that construction delays and additional incurred costs could be avoided.

This was essential given the sheer scale of the project, with approximately 47,000 sq. ft. of wall surface needing protection!

Saving Time & Money – Choosing the Right AWB System

After comparing it to other products on the market, the team chose Momentive’s complete AWB system - Elemax™ 2600  Air & Water-Resistive Barrier Coating, SilPruf™ weatherseal sealants and UltraSpan™ UST2200 transition sheet. Momentive silicone coatings and sealants were chosen thanks to their low temperature performance –  as they are designed to resist freezing, thickening, or changes in consistency, even in the harsh Pennsylvania winter.

This capability allows Elemax 2600 AWB coating to be rolled or even sprayed in temperatures as low as 0° F / -18° C without the need for heating.  With no need for heated storage, this AWB system allowed construction to continue throughout the coldest months.

Primerless, easy-to-apply, and durable enough to withstand a range of harsh conditions – using Elemax AWB coating helped to keep the project team on schedule and was a cost-effective, high-performance solution for this ambitious project.

A Silicone Solution

“The main issue was the temperature,” said Mike Collier, the project lead at Eastern Exterior Wall Systems, Inc. “Everything hinged on the weather when deciding what we could use.”

The choice of AWB system and sealants proved to be the perfect combination, as the joints and corners were able to be sealed and spraying could happen straight away – without having to first let things cure.

“The ability to spray first in some areas, then apply the sealant to the joints, corners, et cetera was valuable,” says Collier. “We couldn't have done this with some of the other products we considered. This also saved us money by eliminating the time involved in waiting for drying.”

The Finished Result

The final project was a huge success, and the three completed buildings are just one example of an ambitious construction design being achieved with the help of Elemax AWB coating and Momentive silicone construction sealants and coatings.
